Green Point Cricket Club 2019_20: Season in Review
Green Point Cricket Club WPCA 2019/2020 Season Summary.
The WPCA 2019/20 season has been a remarkable one for Green Point Cricket Club. The Stephan Oval proved to be a huanting ground for many an opposition during the course of the season and paved the way for many impressive results from our 1st XI right down to our 5ths.
The 1st XI was bolstered by the signing of Joshua Savage and Muneer Alexander along with the experienced Netherlands international player Wesley Barresi for the first half of the season. The season got off to a shaky start with consecutive losses in the AMA 20. A strong finish to the back-end of the AMA 20 propelled the Pointers to a semi-final clash against Primrose in which we narrowly lost in the final over the game. One could say the strong performances in the AMA 20 propelled our 1st XI to a superb start to the 50-over campaign. A streak of 12 wins in 14 games laid the platform for the ultimate goal of the season – promotion to the Premier League. At the top of the order, Zac Elkin and Muneer Alexander laid the platform for the rest of the batsman and Adam Lazarus to score in excess of 220 on a consistent basis. With the ball in hand, Green Point had arguably the best bowling line-up in the league with the classy seam attack of Josuha Savage, Saul Anstey and Adam Lazarus and the spinning duo of Achie Scher and Simon “Mozza” Morris. The 1st XI comprised of an equal balance between bat and ball and this was the perfect formula which resulted in the boy’s winning the WPCA First Division A. #WFGU
Special mention must go out to our star with the bat, Zac Elkin, who was handed a first-class contract for Western Province for the 2020/21 season after impressing with a Century on debut for WP along with a string of consistent performances over a number of seasons for Green Point Cricket Club.
The 2nd XI was recently promoted to Reserve A. Despite the big jump in competition from the previous season the boy’s had an impressive campaign which included victories against Cape Town CC, Durbanville CC and Western Province CC. Ryan Kulber provided a steady-head at the top of the order and provided consistent performance with both and ball which contributed massively to the performances of the 2nd XI.
With the ever-increasing membership at the club, GPCC entered a newly entered 3rd team in the Reserve League. Yasin Razak led from the front as captain with his all-round ability with both bat and ball and contributed massively towards promotion with 16 wins and only 3 losses this season.
The 4th and 5th XI side starred by Gareth Hughes and Reul Miller respectively contributed toward impressive mid-table finishes during the current season.
We would like to thank the committee, supporters and players who had contributed towards a successful 2019/20 season. #WFGU
